It is a long-term commitment of the Force to forge closer relationships with different sectors of the community, including Non-Ethnic Chinese (NEC) residents. As a result of their efforts in this respect, officers from Kowloon West (KW) Region pulled off an Outstanding Police Officer Award presented by the India Association of Hong Kong on August 15.

This is the sixth year in a row the association has presented the award to recognise officers' services and contributions to the community, as well as the professionalism they displayed whilst carrying out their duties.

Attending the presentation with the awardees were Director of Operations Hung Hak-wai, Kowloon West Regional Commander Fan Sik-ming, Yau Tsim District Commander Cheung Kwai-ki and Deputy District Commander Chung Sze-pong. Also present were Consul General of India in Hong Kong, Mr Gaddam Dharmendra; Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng; Chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commission, Mr Lam Woon-kwong, and leaders of the Indian community in Hong Kong.

This year the association presented the 1st Award to Tsim Sha Tsui Divisional Commander Paul Grove, Station Sergeant Tse Chi-kwan of Patrol Sub-unit Tsim Sha Tsui Division and officers of the Chungking-Mirador Task Force.

To show its concerns about the crimes that have happened in Chungking Mansions, Mirador Mansion and the vicinity, and to address local street management issues, Tsim Sha Tsui Division set up the Task Force in March this year. Made up of 14 officers from the Uniform Branch, the Chungking-Mirador Task Force, under the leadership and direction of Mr Grove, is charged with crime control and street management issues. Since its inception, the Task Force has been at the forefront in policing the area. With the support and participation of the local community, including the Owners' Corporations of both Chungking and Mirador mansions, the Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee, and other key stakeholders and internally crime unit and Special Duties Section, Yau Tsim District has seen a coordinated, structured and, more importantly, a sustained approach to both crime control and street level issues.

The 2nd Award was presented to Senior Inspector Cheng Fuk-man and Police Constables Sin Ho-lun and Chow Wai-yan, all from Emergency Unit KW. On July13, an Indian jewellery merchant carrying a suitcase containing diamonds was bashed in the forehead with a wooden board by two men in Tsim Sha Tsui. When the thugs attempted to snatch his suitcase, the merchant put up a struggle and shouted for help, alerting the officers travelling in patrol cars. The two suspects were apprehended and the suitcase was intact.
