New Territories North (NTN) Region has rolled out a series of publicity initiatives since last year to combat and prevent deception. In December last year, it recruited 67 senior citizens in NTN Region as "Crime Prevention Ambassadors" to assist in launching anti-crime publicity and education campaigns. This year, Regional Crime Prevention Office (RCPO) NTN continues its efforts against all sorts of deception.

The first half of this year saw staging of a total of 379 anti-deception publicity activities with banners and posters put up in conspicuous spots to raise public awareness. A total of 14 seminars on "Anti-Deception Tips" were held in public estates, villages and elderly centres in NTN Region to disseminate messages on prevention of telephone and street scams and the $6,000-handout fraud. In addition, buildings and business management companies were updated on the latest modus operandi through the Property Management Anti-crime Information Network,

NTN has adopted a multi-agency approach to alert the general public by showing short films on deception and modus operandi in shopping malls, government offices, markets and town halls that have large flows of pedestrians.

To make publicity more effective, a large-scale campaign against telephone scams was launched on August 10 with District Fight Crime Committee members and "Crime Prevention Ambassadors" manning road shows and distributing leaflets. At the Yu Lan Festival Rice Distribution in Sam Chau Ma Temple, Tuen Mun on August 18, some 1,500 senior citizens were reminded to stay alert to telephone scams.

RCPO NTN will offer an advanced training course for "Crime Prevention Ambassadors" in the second half of this year to update them on crime prevention, crime trend, modus operandi and anti-deception tips, in addition to a large-scale talk on prevention of telephone deception.
