Joint efforts at border crossings against fake banknotes

With the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays around the corner, it is anticipated that there would be, on one hand, a large influx of Mainland tourists to Hong Kong and, on the other hand, an outflow of Hong Kong residents to the Mainland.   This situation calls for more vigilance against counterfeit banknotes.

With this in mind, Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) held a joint publicity drive on counterfeit banknotes at the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau departure halls on  September 14 in conjunction with officers from the Police Community Relations Office and Regional Crime Prevention Office of Border District, Border Junior Police Call Honorary Presidents, Mr Yiu Wing-loi and Mr Liu Yu-hin, Yuen Long District Council member, Mr Man Kwong-ming, and members of the Ku Tung Village Volunteer Team. The officers distributed leaflets to, and answered enquiries from, travellers who showed much concern about how to identify fake banknotes and the tricks of "money swapping" on the Mainland.

The usual modus operandi was to swap a genuine banknote with a fake one in taxis, restaurants and retail stores. Some culprits even opened customers' lockers in massage establishments on the Mainland to swap banknotes.

As the publicity drive was well received by the general travellers, CCB is expected to continue its education and publicity on distinguishing between genuine and faked banknotes.

The younger generation is also a target of anti-fake banknote publicity
