The first INTERPOL Project ATFC (Anti-Trans-National Financial Crime) Working Group Meeting co-hosted by Commercial Crime Bureau (CCB) and the INTERPOL Liaison Office Bangkok (LOBANG) opened in Hong Kong on January 15.

The two-day meeting held at Police Headquarters brought together senior crime investigators and intelligence professionals for investigation of transnational financial crimes to discuss current and future threats, challenges and the best ways to tackle them.

The focus of the first-day meeting was on the financial crimes committed on the Internet, mobile and telephone fraud and pre-payment fraud. Representatives from law enforcement agencies from 12 countries and places, including China, Macao, Singapore, Japan, Mongolia, India, Sri Lanka and the Philippines, took this opportunity to enhance communication and strengthen working partnerships in the Asian and South Pacific Region.

Officiating at the opening of the meeting, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Lo Mung-hung said financial related crimes knew no borders or boundaries and with the advent of the Internet they enabled the criminals to remain invisible when they preyed on their victims.

He believed the law enforcement representatives attending the conference would gain a better appreciation of the problems they are facing, and take home the knowledge and experiences that would contribute to keeping the Region stable and free from financial crimes.

The meeting also saw discussion and presentations by the participants on transnational financial crimes and related issues, with CCB Chief Superintendent Chung Siu-yeung, who is the Chairman of the meeting, and the Head of LOBANG, Ms Malathi Muthu Veran, playing the roles of moderator.

The meeting offers a platform to discuss, and share views on, important issues
