Sergeant (SGT) Hui Wai-fong of Marine North Division was attached to Singapore Police Coast Guard (SPCG) from January 21 to 25 as part of the Marine Region's goal to broaden staff's horizons on overseas maritime policing and further strengthen partnership with the SPCG. During her intensive five-day attachment, SGT Hui visited various units, including the renowned Special Task Squadron (STS), which operates fast interceptor boats to tackle smuggling and illegal immigration. She got briefings on the duties of various units, their establishments, equipment and tactics and toured coastal defence facilities. SGT Hui pointed out that amongst all the facilities she visited, the most impressive one is the vehicle used to enhance communication and radar picketing at sea to more accurately and speedily deploy SPCG vessels, underlining the importance of both land and sea duties working in concert. Working onboard SPCG vessels, she also learned about local maritime policing priorities and smuggling trends. SGT Hui added that SPCG commissioned the construction of two barges after obtaining some inspirations from an earlier visit to the barges operated by the Force. This clearly illustrated the value of the continuous exchanges between the two police forces. After her attachment, SGT Hui said: "As far as I know, I'm the first Woman Sergeant of Marine Region to attend the attachment programme. It not only allowed me to have exchanges with SPCG officers on maritime policing issues but also broadened my horizons. Besides learning about the duties and traditions of the SPCG, I was also reminded of the importance of keeping abreast of the ever-changing global policing environment."
