Kowloon West Regional Commander Fan Sik-ming has commended Senior Auxiliary Police Constable Gil Tung Chi-wang and Auxiliary Police Constable Buzz Leung Ho-wai, both from Sham Shui Po Division, for apprehending a robber and recovering $1.7 million during winter precaution patrol on December 21 last year.

Recalling his anti-crime patrol along Yen Chau Street, Gil said: "We had just finished a vertical building check when we suddenly heard a cry for help, and saw two men fleeing towards Nam Cheong Estate."

An athletics captain in his high school years, Buzz immediately chased after the man carrying a bag, with Gil joining the hot pursuit. At the end of a long chase, Buzz caught up with the suspect, subdued him and recovered the money snatched from a moneychanger.

Good preparation and training

The two officers' success has much to do with their good preparation and training. Noting that familiarity with the area was the key to the successful chase, Buzz said: "I pay attention to crime black spots and potential danger during daily patrol. If I were not familiar with the area, the chase would have been more risky."  Gil added: "While handling robberies, one has to be decisive because a few seconds could make a great difference in intercepting a suspect."

They both consider training crucial to the success of the arrest, especially when the suspect was tough and resistant to the arrest. They had to use the resistance control tactics they learned in the Auxiliary Police Headquarters to subdue the suspect.

 Grateful for support

Buzz is doing his final year studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with major in public health, and aspires to serving society as a police inspector after graduation. Besides the Commanding Officer's (CO) Commendation, Buzz also got a pat on the back by his parents. "My parents' impression of the police has gradually changed. In the past, they thought police job is too dangerous and didn't want me to become a police officer, but after the robbery they realised that police plays a very important role in society," he said.

Gil and Buzz appreciate the care and support of their colleagues. "We got lots of phone calls and whats app messages from them, asking whether we had got hurt," said Gil.

Having served in the auxiliary police force for more than 30 years, it was the first time for Gil to get CO Commendation. "This is definitely the best retirement gift for me, putting a perfect ending to my career as an auxiliary police constable," he noted.

Speaking at the commendation presentation ceremony, Sham Shui Po District Commander Chiu Kai-ting not only appreciated Gil and Buzz's excellent performance, but also highly recognised the contribution of auxiliary police to the Force
