Nepalese editor gets update on police services |

The Editor of a local Nepalese newspaper, "Everest", Mr Kisan Rai, visited Yuen Long District (YLDIST) last December 28 with a view to understanding more about the Force's community services, particularly those for Non-Ethnic Chinese (NEC) community. He is also one of the NEC Cultural Advisors for YLDIST. Mr Rai started publishing "Everest" in 2000 to meet the need of the local Nepalese community for a newspaper in their own language. It has now become a weekly publication distributed throughout the New Territories and even on Lantau Island. Its 20-page content covers both local news and Nepalese activities to update readers on the developments of society. Being a Cultural Advisor, Mr Rai had attended a passing-out parade at Police College and reported on the event in "Everest". He is looking forward to further familiarising himself with the Force's services so that he can cover more topics for his readers. During his visit to YLDIST, Mr Rai realised that YLDIST has been engaging the NEC community with many activities such as language courses, mutual visits, sport activities, police recruitment talks and social functions. Appreciating YLDIST's efforts to bridge cultural gap, Mr Rai plans to make good use of "Everest" to publicise anti-crime messages as well as Junior Police Call activities. Mr Rai reckons that he, as a Cultural Advisor, is duty-bound to help bridge the communication gap between the Nepalese and locals. Therefore, he has attended many police events like fight crime activities, and exchanged views with Cultural Advisors of other nationalities, such as Pakistan and Nigeria. For Mr Rai, many Nepalese now consider Hong Kong "a home away from home", and are taking root with their families in Hong Kong. He hopes YLDIST would continue to organise more activities to help the NEC community groom their next generation. Prior to the conclusion of the visit, YLDIST Commander Tang Ping-keung thanked Mr Rai for his valuable contribution and support to YLDIST and assured him of YLDIST's continuous effort to engage the NEC community with the support of the Cultural Advisors.
