Mong Kok District (MKDIST) has been implementing an anti-burglary strategy to prevent and detect burglary crimes and safeguard the property of the public. As another similar initiative, a Project Team led by Deputy District Commander, Senior Superintendent (SSP) Tsang Yim-sheung, has been implementing an "Anti-burglary Package" since April last year.

The initiative aims at engaging the community and making optimum use of resources for preventing and combatting burglary crimes in a more systematic and coordinated manner.  For instance, Patrol Sub-units conduct high profile patrols in the vicinity of buildings and inspect the security measures there; Police Community Relations Office (PCRO) mobilises "Yau Tsim Mong Fight Crime Veterans" to promote community partnership; Regional Crime Prevention Office carries out anti-burglary campaigns for buildings and real estate agencies; and District Intelligence Section analyses crime trends and intelligence on potential burglars.

Based on the results of the analysis, officers are strategically deployed at burglary black spots and upon the advice given by PCRO Neighbourhood Policing Officers, 21 buildings have beefed up security by installing CCTV or main gates.

SSP Tsang points out that Mong Kok is a busy district and a transport hub with many shopping malls and a high mobility of population.  There are also many old fashioned buildings where security measures should be upgraded. Under the "Mong Kok District Anti-Burglary Strategy", MKDIST has successfully pooled resources and deployed beat officers on an intelligence-led basis, and coordinated support by various community stakeholders, including District Council, Owners Corporations, security guards and "Yau Tsim Mong Fight Crime Veterans", resulting in a significant reduction in burglary crimes.

Speaking at a meeting of the Yau Tsim Mong Housing and Building Management Committee, SSP Tsang emphasised that residents played an important role in preventing burglary crimes.  In response, District Councillors shared this viewpoint and pledged to encourage the residents to continue to help police maintain law and order.
