The inauguration of the Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) 2013/14 was held in Police Headquarters on April 30. The ceremony also marked the 10th anniversary of the PMP.
Officiating at the ceremony were Director of Personnel and Training Chau Kwok-leung, Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Ng Tsui Fung-ying, Head Mentor Paul Lau, Deputy Head Mentor Cheung Ching, and representatives from the ten tertiary institutes participating in the PMP.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mr Chau attributed the success of the PMP to the dedication and support of the participating institutes and mentors.
The participating institutes are City University of Hong Kong, Baptist University, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Lingnan University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Institute of Education, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Open University of Hong Kong and University of Hong Kong. With their support, the PMP has gained more popularity among undergraduates and developed from strength to strength.
The PMP enables mentees, who are undergraduates, and mentors, who are police officers from the mentees' alma maters, to share studies experience and positive life values. The PMP also enables the mentees to understand better the nature and challenges of police jobs through activities such as visiting police units, taking part in job attachment programmes as summer interns and participating in summer day camps. These first hand information and experiences would motivate the mentees to pursue a career with the Force after graduation.
The PMP was launched in 2004. For 2013/14, a total of 219 undergraduates have been selected as mentees, of whom about 80 per cent are expected to graduate next year. To meet a rising demand, the Mentor Cadre has been expanded to a total of 91 mentors.
