Direction of Operations Wong Chi-hung attended the second "Diploma in Police Search and Venue Security" Presentation Ceremony of the Force Search Unit (FSU) as an officiating guest on June 19. He also congratulated the graduates on their hard work and achievements.

In May 2008, the Education Bureau launched the "Qualifications Framework (QF)", which is a seven-level hierarchical system covering qualifications in the academic, vocational and continuing education sectors. All qualifications recognised under QF are quality assured.

In March 2010, FSU, after a great deal of hard work, was accredited to deliver the "Diploma in Police Search and Venue Security" programme under QF. Since then a total of 104 officers have enrolled in the diploma programme and so far 26 of them have graduated.

Lifelong learning and professionalism

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Wong emphasised that the Force supported and encouraged continuous learning and career development amongst officers. He called on the graduates to apply their search and screening skills as well as their workplace attachment experience in operations so as to meet the high professional standards set by the Force.

Mr Wong pointed out that FSU would be applying for accreditation of a new certificate course in "Behaviour Pattern Recognition" later this year, which would further enhance the professionalism and credibility of FSU. The certificate course will be incorporated into the diploma curriculum to make the diploma programme more comprehensive.

Speaking of the importance of the diploma programme, Mr Wong reminded graduates of the extremely important role that they played, adding knowledge and expertise were vital for ensuring that FSU would be able to continue to operate at the very high standards that it had set for itself. In this regard, all graduates should be very proud of their achievements.

Graduates' comments
One of the graduates, Sergeant Chong Kwok-chiu, said: "Over the past few years, FSU has gained a great deal of valuable knowledge and developed many good practices from the operations and major events it has taken part. Through the diploma programme, these experiences have been consolidated, developed and passed on to the next generation of the Search Cadre in a professional and academic manner. At the same time, the hands on practical training, which is so important for Police officers, has also been retained and developed. By offering an accredited diploma programme, FSU has further enhanced the professionalism and competency of officers. The programme has offered graduates a great deal of satisfaction and a strong sense of achievement."

Another graduate, Woman Police Constable Lau Nim-so, commented: "With this professionally accredited programme, I have gained more confidence in my newly developed skills and ability and I believe that this would be a big help not only for my FSU duties but also my career in the Force. Joining FSU and completing the diploma programme, I have come across the opportunities and challenges that normally would not be available to me. I strongly recommend FSU to all officers."
