To help Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) students develop self-esteem and discipline, Yau Tsim District's Project Gemstone Management Team recently organised a one-day training programme for NEC Junior Police Call (JPC) members in Police College.
The programme started with a lesson on punctuality when the NEC students were given a specific assembly and pick up time. Despite heavy rain, they arrived in Police College on time to a welcome by Yau Tsim District Commander Yu Tat-chung and Yau Tsim JPC Hon President, Mr Chiu Yu-hei. Mr Yu also offered them words of encouragement introduced the disciplined life in Police College.
With the guidance of Sergeant (SGT) Chui Yuen-tak, a volunteer from Police College, the "Project Gemstone" students practised saluting and marching. After this, they toured a gym where Station Sergeant Lau Tung-hing shared his experience of interviewing skills. Next was a meeting with Recruit Police Constables on their life and training in Police College.
In the afternoon, SGT Chan Wai-leung of Police College demonstrated the physical exercises recruits are required to undergo in the college. Following a day's drill and outing experience, the NEC students requested for another similar programme in the near future and thanked the Project Gemstone Management Team and Yau Tsim District for laying on a very interest programme for them.
"Project Gemstone", which commenced in February, is a JPC project to help NEC youths to improve their proficiency in Chinese and teach them recruitment interviewing skills with the ultimate aim of helping and encouraging them to join the Force. Each Saturday, the "Gemstone" members attend a two-hour Chinese lesson and other police-related activities organised by YTDIST police volunteers, such as visits to police stations and other units.
