New Territories South (NTS) Region rolled out a pilot project known as "Green Bee" in October last year. Environmental Conservation and Community Work are the focuses of the project.
All NTS Formations have formed "Caring" and "Green" groups to promote social responsibility activities identified by the Regional Working Group. The activities organised by the two focus groups included anti-drug campaign, health seminars for the elderly, elderly services, organ and blood donation campaign, Chinese lessons for Non-ethnic Chinese children, energy saving campaign, tree planting, collection of used books and old clothes, as well as recycling of food waste.
A four-pronged approach "EDGE", comprising Education, Dedication, Good Practices and Evolution, has been adopted for development of the project. Officers are also provided with the latest information on environmental conservation and community work for encouraging them to participate in the project.
Good practices and successful stories are collected and shared amongst officers through different media. Under the direction of the NTS Regional Working Group, Formation management will monitor and review the progress of the focus groups on a regular basis.
The progress so far is encouraging. Tsuen Wan District, winner of "The Best Unit of NTS Green Bee Corner Design Competition", is actively engaged in various environmental friendly campaigns, including "One unit one small potted plant activity" and "Energy saving promotion".
Airport District is participating in a food recycling programme hosted by the Airport Authority, which collects food waste from airport business partners and arranges delivery to an off-site plant for conversion into fertilizer.
Traffic NTS officers have arranged a series of donation exercises in which toys, second hand cameras and books were collected and donated to the community, especially the under privileged children.
Ten EU NTS officers are learning hairdressing skills in order to train up volunteer students for providing free haircut service to the elderly.
Through participation in those activities, officers have their awareness of the concept of social responsibility greatly enhanced.
