As the Hong Kong Geopark has been internationally recognised and water activities in Hong Kong are becoming increasingly popular, Sai Kung, with a long coastline and sandy beaches, has become a "water paradise" for both locals and tourists to enjoy water sports in summer. Therefore, Marine East Division (MEDIV) has formed a team of "Sea Safety Guarding Angels", who are mobilised in weekends, public holidays and throughout the summer holidays to make the public more conscious of safety at sea.
MEDIV also invited the pleasure craft industry to participate in the "No-drugs Charter" campaign a few months ago to tackle the problems of drug abuse at sea. So far, the response has been encouraging, with 245 pleasure crafts, 70 per cent of the total number, pledging support for the campaign. This means the craft owners will affix a signage on the hull to indicate that they will report any suspected drug abuse activity on board to police. This represents a joint effort between the public and MEDIV to combat crimes and prevent drug abusers accidentally falling into the sea.
On June 9, the "Guarding Angels", Sai Kung Division Patrol Sub-unit officers, Wong Tai Sin District Junior Police Call members and two members of the Sai Kung District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Zhang Yiliang and Mr Chen Quanjun, distributed leaflets and souvenirs at the Sai Kung Pier to the citizens going to sea.
Meanwhile, Police Dog Unit officers and their canine partners patrolled nearby areas to deter drug abuse at sea - a two-pronged approach to promote sea safety.
