Duo jailed for trafficking in dangerous drugs

Two men aged 36 and 28 convicted of trafficking in dangerous drugs were each sentenced to six years' imprisonment at the Court of First Instance today (May 24).

The court heard that an operation was mounted by the Police Narcotics Bureau in September 2005 in which undercover officers were deployed to negotiate with the 36-year-old defendant who was believed to be a local drug supplier.

On October 6, 2005, one of the officers met the man at a hotel on Nathan Road in Yau Ma Tei for a transaction during which the officer gave some marked money to the man and received in return a key of a locker at the Kowloon Park Swimming Pool in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Another undercover police officer then proceed to open the locker at the swimming pool which was guarded by the 28-year-old defendant. At this juncture, ambushing officers in both locations immediately took action and arrested both men.

A total of 10 335 tablets of Ecstasy were found inside the locker and the seizure could fetch about $0.83 million if sold in the local retail market.

The duo was later charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs. They both pleaded guilty to their charges at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts on March 24 this year and the sentences were meted out today.
