Praise for efforts with youths

POLICE Force initiatives to reform troubled youths and to keep them out of trouble have been praised by a leading local youth social worker.

¡@¡@Dr Philemon Choi Yuen-wan(pictured right) said the Force's efforts to reach out to young offenders were yielding encouraging results.

¡@¡@"I am so glad Police have taken the initiative to move into the community to help Hong Kong's youths," Dr Choi told 70 senior officers at a seminar at the Police Training School on March 10.

¡@¡@"Police youth schemes have been very successful, so much so, I am afraid you will put us social workers out of business," quipped Dr Choi, who has more than 27 years' experience dealing with troubled youngsters.

¡@¡@"But seriously, for this you get my full respect and compliments and I would like to thank the Force on behalf of Hong Kong's kids."

¡@¡@Dr Choi said there had been good feedback from the Police's own Operation Breakthrough campaign in the New Territories North Region.

¡@¡@But Dr Choi said the work for the Force in this area was just beginning. He recommended that frontline officers develop their skills to identify youths with charm, intelligence and other traits that would make them a suitable gang leader.

¡@¡@He said family problems, particularly the longing for a father figure and acceptance, were the main reasons youths turned to gangs. He said these youngsters needed a new type of hero image to look up to, one of authority and of caring.

¡@¡@Police could provide this role model, he said.

Surprising news for the Chan family

AMY Chan sat on her bed and frowned. "After all this time," she thought, "I won't have a room of my own! It's so unfair!"

¡@¡@Amy, her mum, dad and her grandma had been living in their apartment for as long as she could remember. As Amy sat in her little room staring at her schoolbooks on the shelf and her pictures on the walls, she felt very unhappy.

¡@¡@"Why should I have to move into Grandma's room?" she said out loud, to no one in particular. "I'm 13 years old and I need my own room. It's all because my parents want to have more children! It's so unfair!"

¡@¡@Amy's mum and dad had taken her out to her favourite restaurant the night before to break the news.

¡@¡@"You're going to be a big sister!" they had excitedly told Amy. They had actually thought that Amy would be pleased. Then they told her the rest of the news. It wasn't going to be just one baby, but two.

¡@¡@"Twins!" Amy shrieked when her dad told her. "But where will they sleep?"

¡@¡@Mr and Mrs Chan had looked at each other and sighed. "We're sorry, dear," her mum said. "We think it's best if the twins have your room and you move in with Grandma."

¡@¡@So, Amy had no choice. She had to give up her room.

¡@¡@Amy started to pull down her pictures and pack away her books when she heard her mum and dad come back from seeing the doctor.

¡@¡@"Amy!" Mrs Chan called, as she sat down on the sofa. "Come here sweetheart, we have some more news for you."

¡@¡@"What now?" thought Amy, who couldn't imagine anything worse than the news about the twins.

¡@¡@"Darling, we have a surprise for you," Mr Chan chuckled when Amy came into the room. "Do you remember that we said that Mum was expecting twins? Well, it looks as though the doctor made a mistake."

¡@¡@" Amy's heart leapt when she heard her dad say this. Maybe she wasn't going to have to leave her room after all!

¡@¡@"I'm not expecting twins," said Mrs Chan. "It's triplets!"

March answers: Find and Fix: IT'S nearly exam time again. Effective planning, plenty of revision and working on past papers are the key factors for SUCCESS. A revision timetable with achievable targets is AN excellent idea. It's best to revise FOR short periods. After revising for an hour, take a short break so that your brain can process the INFORMATION. Do you USUALLY make extensive notes? An alternative to pages of notes is to MAKE a diagram or 'spidergram'. Draw a spider's body and WRITE the topic inside it. On each OF the 'legs' write the key points. Diagrams ARE quicker to write and easier to recall. Try to write essay plans for likely questions and complete as many PAST papers as possible. Finally, be POSITIVE. Fill the Gap: mask, snorkel, ocean, swimsuit, flippers. Crossword: Across: 1 easily, 4 horrible, 6 raw, 7 luck, 8 win; Down: 1 enormous, 2 sorry, 3 below, 5 borrow.
