To avoid tooth decay and maintain healthy gums, we all know the importance of brushing and flossing teeth. A recent study has found that poor oral health can affect your cardiovascular health. While a direct cause-and-effect relationship has yet to be established, it is quite proven to increase your risk of heart disease.
There seems to be a connection between gum disease and atherosclerosis, known as hardening of the arteries, which is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke. Gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis usually lead to bleeding. Our mouth is teeming with bacteria that can then enter the blood stream through the bleeding gums. This results in inflammation of the coronary arteries. The heart receives its own supply of blood from the coronary arteries. Inflammation in the arteries will increase the possibility of building up blood clots, eventually blocking blood flow and cause a heart attack.
In fact, good oral hygiene not only gives you shiny teeth and fresh breath, but also offers incredible health benefits. All you need to do is brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes, use dental floss to avoid plaque from accumulating and have regular dental visits to find early signs of oral disease. This is a very simple oral health routine; yet it is vital to preventing dental problems. Remember, your teeth are your lifetime companions that deserve the best of your care.
