Absent

She was absent at the meeting. ✘

她沒有出席會議。

大家看見 “Absent” 這個字，一定覺得它很熟悉，因為你們不上課的時候，老師便會說你們 “absent”，它是「形容詞」，名詞是 “absence”。

但在上述的 “She was absent at the meeting”一句用錯了「介詞」 “at”，我們應該用“from”。

正確例子：

She was absent from the meeting. ✓

另一正確例子：

Several students were absent from school because of illness. ✓

好幾個學生因病缺課。

我們也可以說某人 “absent from work” ，那就是「沒有上班」、「曠工」的意思。

其實 “absent” 這個詞很常用，老師請大家回答問題，大家不就是常常「一臉茫然」嗎？

When I spoke to her, she looked at me in an absent way.

我和她說話時，她一臉茫然地看著我。

「心不在焉」 “absent-minded” 更是普遍。例如：

He absent-mindedly dropped a ring down the toilet.

他太“大頭蝦”了，讓戒指掉進馬桶裡。
