Sea safety is high on the agenda nowadays. That's why Marine Region launched a multimedia campaign on maritime Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) earlier this year.
SP (Sea Standards), Ng Wai-ming noted that most of the OSH incidents in Marine Region were minor in nature due to the carelessness or inadvertent mistakes of individual officers rather than a lack of skills or knowledge. The campaign was therefore aimed at raising the OSH awareness of frontline officers through a contest of video, poster and slogan on sea safety. A "Most Productive Division" was offered in addition to gold, silver and bronze prizes.
There was overwhelming support from frontline officers with a total of 136 entries received. The winner of the gold prize in the category of video, SGT Lee Kwok-wai of MHDIV, agreed that awareness was most crucial for preventing the OSH accidents. Officers seldom got injuried in deck duties because they were more alert. OSH accidents usually happened in a safe environment when they less alert, such as tripping over a rope or other objects on deck.
The awards were presented by RC MAR Chiu Wai-yin on April 17. She was impressed with the enthusiasm and innovation of the participants. To maintain the momentum of the campaign, the winning entries will be used for producing a 10-minute video for Unit Training Day.
