Kwai Tsing District (KWTDIST) Commander Wong Kin-wah has issued letters of appreciation to the money exchange shops for helping police foil telephone scams. Kwai Chung Divisional Commander Leung Chung-man has presented the letters to the persons-in-charge of the money exchange shops on behalf of Mr Wong.
Among the recipients, a money exchange shop in Kwai Chung Plaza successfully identified and foiled three telephone scams in August. The persons-in-charge of another two money exchange shops in Maritime Square and Kwai Chung Plaza were presented with the Good Citizen Award last year for helping police bust a number of telephone scams.
KWTDIST set up a Telephone Scam Prevention Dedicated Unit in August 2012, with officers from the District Crime Squad and District Intelligence Section serving as members. They maintain close liaison with the 42 banks and 19 money exchange shops in KWTDIST and provide regular updates on the latest tactics employed by culprits and the methods of identifying victimised customers. Besides, a hotline has been set up for bank and money exchange shop staff members to make enquiries. Since establishment of the dedicated unit, KWTDIST has stopped remittance requests made in 31 phone scams involving over $2.1 million.
