Complying with the Force's strategic direction in engaging the Non-ethnic Chinese (NEC) community, various Regions and Districts have offered different projects and activities to boost liaison with the NEC community. Below are some of the efforts.
KW fights crime with talent quest
The Regional Crime Prevention Office of Kowloon West (KW) Region and Kowloon West Youth-care Committee (KWYCC) staged a "Kowloon West Fight Crime Without Boundary Talent Competition" on November 14 for promoting multi-cultural exchanges and promoting sense of belonging to the community. With combating crime as a theme, the competition not only made young people more aware of crime prevention, but also encouraged them to help the police fight crime.
Over 100 youngsters from schools and non-profit-making organisations in KW Region formed 12 teams for the competition. Those with ethnicities of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Thailand and the Philippines joined the locals in competing for awards by presenting a variety of performances.
More than 700 spectators from many ethnic groups turned up to support the event. KW Regional Commander Yu Tat-chung and Chairman of KWYCC, Mr Cheung Che-kong, officiated at the event.
NTN reinforces liaison with NEC leaders
New Territories North (NTN) Region hosted a liaison gathering for over 40 NEC community leaders and Imams on November 19 and introduced its projects and initiatives to engage the NEC community, such as Project HIMALAYA, and the crime trends in NTN. Also introduced were the services of TRANSLINK interpretation service for the NEC community and projects of the Junior Police Call and Senior Police Call.
The NEC community leaders and Imams also discussed with NTN Regional Commander Kwok Ho-fai, Deputy Regional Commander Tsang Cheung-tat and senior officers the current crime situation and crime prevention. After the police presentations, the guests and hosts exchanged views whilst savouring traditional curry.
YTDIST forges ties with African community
A party of Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) officers visited the African Community Hong Kong on November 11. During the visit, Divisional Commander of Tsim Sha Tsui Division Kwok Ka-chuen delivered a presentation on the crime trend, offered crime prevention advice and encouraged African community leaders to disseminate anti-crime messages to their folk.
The President of the African Community Hong Kong, Mr Diallo Ali, welcomed the police visit and appreciated having an opportunity to get to know more about the work of the police in Hong Kong. He also pledged full support for the police in maintaining law and order.
TPDIST officers visit Thai temple
Tai Po District (TPDIST) Commander Patrick Laidler led a party of officers to visit the a Thai temple in Tai Po, Wat Makthumvanaram, during a festival of the temple on November 8. The temple is popular among the local Thai migrants and Ms Jarunee Nakornsree, a Vice Consul (Labour) of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Hong Kong, was on hand to meet the party.
Besides forging closer ties with their host, the officers took the opportunity to familiar themselves with the religious and traditions of the Thai community with a view to enhancing mutual understanding.
YLDIST engages Non-Refoulement Claimants in crime prevention
Yuen Long District (YLDIST) offered a Fight Crime Seminar for the Non-Refoulement claimants on November 28 to raise their awareness of crime prevention.
Among the over 100 NEC attending the seminar, the majority is Non-Refoulement claimants. During the seminar, representatives from the police and six non-governmental organisations introduced to them the crime trend in Yuen Long and the local laws as well as support services.
SSPODIST officers visit Islamic Council
Sham Shui Po District (SSPODIST) Commander Tsui Wai-hung and Deputy District Commander Lau Wai-mun visited the Chief Imam of the Islamic Council in Sham Shui Po on November 13, and introduced the characteristics and action plans of SSPODIST. The visit offered the officers a better understanding of the Islamic culture for their mission to promote racial harmony.
On November 26, Ms Lau led members of a NEC Volunteer Group in conducting an anti-crime sharing session with NEC students in a secondary school. The police party reminded the students to stay alert to the lure of money, drugs and criminals. Eleven students were also appointed Anti-Crime Ambassadors on the spot to help promote crime prevention messages in the community.
EDIST road safety seminar for NEC
The Police Community Relations Office of Eastern District (EDIST) and the Road Safety Team of Traffic Hong Kong Island offered a total of over 100 NEC youths a road safety seminar on October 17 and 31. With road safety messages delivered by officers, the youths came to know more about road safety regulations, safe cycling, proper use of public transport and the causes of common traffic accidents.
