The Chairman of the Police Sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Disciplined Services Salaries and Conditions of Service, Mr Francis Ho, inspected the passing-out parade of 30 probationary inspectors and 240 recruit police constables at Police College on December 5.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Ho said the graduates would face a lot of stress and challenges in different posts, sometimes even temptation and provocation. "I suggest reverting to the basics and sticking to the traditional virtues to which we have been so accustomed that we tend to forget easily."
He advised the graduates to "hold on to the strength of character". "I believe you will exercise restraint and abide by the law, uphold the rule of law, and be determined to exercise your powers and enforce the law in a fair and impartial manner, fighting crimes for the benefit of prosperity."
Mr Ho pointed out that the rapid paces of globalisation, technological advancement, social development, and evolution of social values and expectation of public services had made society more complicated and volatile.
He told the graduates to remain diligent because their devotion and commitment to work and the drive that would come along would bring joy and satisfaction to their work. He said, "An officer who is hardworking, willing to take on responsibilities and capable will definitely garner respect from colleagues, earn the recognition and appreciation of superiors, and find joy in his work."
He also encouraged the graduates to pursue lifelong learning and strive for excellence. "The Hong Kong Police Force is exemplary in providing training for its staff and enhancing their professionalism and academic qualifications. I hope you can make good use of the internal resources as well as those available elsewhere for continuous self-enhancement to cope with a rapidly changing society and work environment," he said, adding that officers should acquire knowledge of subjects outside their profession to broaden their horizons.
