With the aim of enhancing driving safety for police motorcyclists, Police College has jointly conducted a research project on "Neuropsychological Tests" with the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University since February 2013 to find suitable training to improve police motorcyclists' abilities of visual attention and hazard perception.

The "Neuropsychological Tests" collected data through a series of tests on "Visual Attention Abilities" and "Hazard Perception Abilities". A total of 70 officers from Regional Traffic formations have been invited to attend the tests and those who scored low in the tests also attended training by way of "Commentary Riding Training".

In May last year, Dr Cheng Shu-kei, Associate Professor of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, who is an Honorary Research Fellow of Police College, concluded the research with the finding that "Commentary Riding Training" would improve the visual attention and hazard perception abilities of police motorcyclists and thus would enhance driving safety.

In July last year, with the finding of the research, Police Driving and Traffic Training Centre conducted a feasibility study on "Emergency Response Driving Training" and formally introduced "Commentary Riding Training" to the "Strategic Road Network Motorcycle Course". The revised training course was renamed "Enhanced Strategic Road Network Motorcycle Course" and the duration was increased from five to eight days. So far 39 trainees have completed the new curriculum, and their feedback is favourable.

This year, the Police Driving and Traffic Training Centre will take more initiatives to enhance driving and traffic training. The initiatives will include review and enhancement of the Enhanced Strategic Road Network Motorcycle Course, and introduction of refresher traffic competency and enforcement equipment training. Police College will continue to research into enhanced skills of driving police vehicles for providing more professional and safe driving training.
