The Psychological Services Group (PSG) held a seminar about "POE in the changing world: understanding the psychology of protestors" at the Police Headquarters on June 22, with renowned sociologist Prof Lui Tai-lok and Assistant Professor of Department of Psychology from the University of Hong Kong Dr Christian Chan as guest speakers.
Both Prof Lui and Dr Chan pointed out that the use of extreme ways to express public views had become a global trend. Prof Lui thought that an array of factors such as restructuring of assets and changing upward mobility of people had transformed Hong Kong society. Then Dr Chan analysed the mindset of participants in public events.
Both speakers acknowledged officers' difficulties in law enforcement. They suggested raising the transparency of enforcement actions by arranging on-site briefings during public events so as to build up trust with the public. Consideration might also be given to exploring how to forge a common identity and vision between the Force and members of the public.
The seminar received positive feedbacks from the participants, and enabled them to understand from different perspectives the changing ways of expressing public opinions.
On the other hand, PSG invited Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychological Studies of the Education University of Hong Kong Dr Lau Yuet-ying to give a seminar on "Balance and Wisdom" at the New Territories North Regional Headquarters on June 15. The seminar aimed to give tips to shift-duty officers on how to enhance sleeping quality.
