In response to the issue of illegal immigrants (IIs) sneaking into the territory via land control points by hiding under cross-boundary trucks, Border District (BORDIST) arranged a meeting with nine representatives from six cross-boundary freight transport unions, and officials of the Immigration Department as well as Customs and Excise Department at BORDIST Headquarters on October 12 to raise the freight sector's alertness on the matter.
Led by BORDIST Commander Yau Siu-kei, officers briefed the union representatives about the latest modus operandi of IIs, the scope and penalties of the amended legislation about assisting "unauthorised entrants", and measures adopted by law enforcement agencies to combat illegal immigration. The participants then explored ways to prevent IIs from hiding under trucks. Apart from distributing leaflets at land control points and container yards to boost stakeholders' vigilance, the drivers are encouraged to check their trucks before entering the territory.
The Chairman of Lok Ma Chau China-Hong Kong Freight Association, Mr Stanley Chaing, thanked the Force for enhancing communication with them on the matter. They would remind their members to stay alert and assist the Force in curbing illegal immigration activities.
