Deputy Commissioner (Management) (DCP MAN) Chau Kwok-leung stressed that professional police officers should keep themselves abreast with the rapidly changing society by pursuing lifelong learning and strengthening themselves as well as the way they work and interact with people, so as to serve the community with pride and care. He gave the remarks to 42 Probationary Inspectors (PIs)and 250 Recruit Police Constables at a passing-out parade in the Police College on June 24.
"Police work is multi-faceted and highly demanding. No matter whether it is day or night, good or bad weather, any difficulties ahead, officers rise to challenges and carry out their duties in fighting crime, maintaining law and order, handling different incidents and taking part in rescue operations and the like. It is challenging but meaningful, as through our efforts, we help to ensure the safety and stability of our community," Mr Chau said.
He noted that in addition to enhancing officers' professional abilities, it is also vital to gain support from the public. This is not an easy task, as the society is becoming increasingly complex and citizens have higher expectations of the Force, he explained.
"I firmly believe that working together as a team will make us stronger. It will also enable us to overcome whatever hurdles or obstacles we may face in our path," Mr Chau said.
He encouraged the graduates to uphold the Force values of integrity and honesty, while serving the community in a fair, impartial and compassionate manner and deliver their duties without fear or favour. Only by doing so could they win the support of the general public, he added.
To conclude, Mr Chau said upon his retirement, he would like to thank the Force for the nurture, trust and opportunities given to him, as well as his colleagues for their support. He was honoured to have grown up with the Force and witness its transformation into a professional, upright, efficient, committed and modernised law enforcement body.
