The Junior Police Officers Development Learning Division of the Police College invited a Nursing Officer from the Department of Health (DH), Ms Lum Lai-chun, and a representative of the Hong Kong Transplant Sports Association, Ms Queenie Chew, to speak on organ donation to about 130 officers on June 6 to increase their understanding of the subject.
Ms Lum said, "In Hong Kong, there are on annual average less than 200 deceased persons whose clinical conditions are fit for organ donation. Since the consent of family members is required before the organ transplantation, in reality, less than half of these deceased patients could successfully donate their organs." The real-life story of Ms Chew, who benefited from organ donation, was found very touching to the participants.
The sharing not only dispelled some common misconceptions about organ donation and clarified the relevant legal issues, but also highlighted the importance of communicating with family members in advance about the will in organ donation. After the talk, most of the participants expressed their support to the noble cause and would practise the key "3S" in organ donation, which is to "Sign-up, Speak-out, and Spread-out".
