Regional Commander of Kowloon West Cheuk Hau-yip visited the Regional Command and Control Centre of Kowloon (RCCC K) on October 3 to express appreciation to officers who performed duty when severe typhoon Mangkhut swept across Hong Kong. He praised the officers for their dedication and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
During the passage of the typhoon, officers of RCCC K made relentless efforts to handle calls from the public requesting emergency services. As some officers were stranded at home because of disruption to transport services, the officers already hustling in the console worked in relays for 16 hours to make up for a shortage of manpower and to maintain the provision of emergency services to the public.
Sergeant Lam Ka-man recalled the experience of his team when Hurricane Signal No. 10 was in force. When he was about to leave home for work at RCCC K, three Police Communications Officers (PCOs) who got stranded at home asked if he could pick them up for work. The officers displayed strong commitment to serving the public despite facing difficult conditions.
PCO Cheung Hiu-tung reported duty the following day. Seeing the aftermath of the typhoon on her way to work, she was deeply impressed by the determination and courage of frontline officers who remained steadfast in discharging their duties during the passage of the typhoon.
