TAKING the Force's "Healthy Life Styles" drive very seriously indeed, personnel from NTS chose not only to "talk the talk" but also to "walk the walk", with same 150 runners signing up to take part in the annual 8.8 km NTS Shing Mun Run. Some of the runners, of course, took the "walk the walk" bit too literally, and whilst the fastest runner PC 11408, Kong Tim-sing of KWTDIST was back in 32' 38' minutes, some of the slower participants were back just short of 60 minutes. Unlike last year, when there was a staggered start (and not on account of alcoholic consumption prior to the race), this years' runners all set off together in a mass start reminiscent of crowds at last year's Yoahan sales. |

The race was blessed with excellent weather after the heavy rains only one week earlier which might have made the course a quagmire of mud, and runners not intent on a fast time were able to enjoy the pleasant and relaxing views in the country park. As usual, the winning overall team was Kwai Chung District, with DC KWT accepting the trophy on behalf of his staff. Regrettably, the DC KWT, Mr Harry Aitken, was unable to run himself as he was sporting a brand new walking stick to help support his limping gait. No doubt Mr Aitken will return from retirement for next year's event sans walking stick. |
Various key personnel from NTS presented the many prizes, with RC NTS, Mr Braithwaite commending all officers for their excellent efforts; although the 75 or 80 officers who finished before him will shortly be transferring to another Region. With the Lantau Run, the NTS Mess Fun Run and now the Shing Mun Race firmly under their belts, NTS officers are now considering entering a team for next year's Tans-Sahara race. Any volunteers? THE final of the "Wallis Trophy" was
played at POC on the afternoon of Thursday 19 March 98 between 'rinks' (four bowlers in a
'rink') from CPB and EU NTN.
The winner, for a second year running, was CPB 'A' by a score of 26 - 16. The final was the culmination of a competition that started in October 97 with a total of 20 rinks from different formations throughout the Force. Mr. Ken Wallis was invited to present the trophy and souvenirs to both teams. |
The competition began in 1986 from an idea by Ken to foster the game of lawn bowls in the Force and especially to attract new players to the sport. It can be safely said that the 'fruits' of the idea were certainly harvested in 1997 with Police winning the prestigious 1 Division title in the Men's Summer League for the first time in over 80 years, and with club members winning a number of national competitions. Many of the current Force bowlers came into the game via the annual "Wallis Trophy" competition. Ian Marriott, the Police Lawn Bowls Club Chairman, rounded off the afternoon's events by presenting Ken with an inscribed pewter plate in recognition of his contribution to lawn bowls over the years and also to mark Ken's retirement form the Force. |
