Mainland women PSB officers
visit Hong Kong Police

Cao Mu-zhen talks with D OPS Ng Ching-kwok and RC NTN Wong Leung Kam-shan

PSB women officers are briefed on the emergency 999 daily operation

ALTHOUGH Hong Kong and Guangdong Forces have exchanged policing experience throughout the years and have regular contacts, for the first time a delegation of senior women police officers from Guangdong Province Public Security Bureau paid a two-day visit to their Hong Kong counterparts on 13-14 May.

The 10-woman Guangdong delegation to Hong Kong was led by Cao Mu-zhen, Director of Internal Affairs Division, Guangdong Provincial PSB and President, Guangdong Association for Policewomen.

Their busy itinerary included a tour of the RCCC HKI (after a courtesy call to Acting CP Wong Tsan-kwong), where they were briefed by SP OPS HKI Tse Ho-yin on the daily operation of the emergency 999 console; a trip to the Police Training School where its Commandant Wong Doon-yee enlightened them on police training; and an outing to the newly opened Chek Lap Kok Airport Police Station where they were welcomed by DDC CLK Chris Wilson and then briefed by CIP Lee Cheuk-wai on policing work of the area.

Highlights among many of the visit included a tea party at the PTS Officers' Mess where the delegation met over 100 Hong Kong women police of varying ranks and from various formations; and participation in a seminar with senior Hong Kong women officers at the Police Officers' Club chaired by RC NTN Wong Leung Kam-shan. Director of Operations, Ng Ching-kwok gave the opening address. Topics on equal opportunities and development of women officers in police work of the two cities were discussed with much interest.

Other representatives of the Force who took part in the seminar were: ACP Training Millie Stradmoor; DC SSPo Bonnie Smith; SSP Adm NTN Kong Cheung Chi Lan; SSP Recruitment Lau Tse Kam-har; SSP Adm HKI Catherine Roper; SSP Staff Relations Chang Mo-see; DDC AP Wong Fung-yee; DVC YMT Li King-sui; and SIP Liaison Bureau, Chan Yat-sze.

"During their visit, Guangdong women police officers visited a variety of formations and facilities of the Hong Kong Police Force," said Acting CP Wong Tsan-kwong. "They succeeded in having very constructive exchanges of views on police work with our woman officers - which I believe helped them better understand the policy as well as the structure of the Hong Kong Force and will reinforce future co-operation between women officers from the two cities."

Last year, ten senior Hong Kong women police officers participated in a seminar in Guangzhou hosted by the Guangdong Woman Public Security Bureau Officials' Association to mark International Women's Day.

Save baby Fan Chai
A TOTAL of 47 police officers from Sheung Shui Division and NTN Traffic last week registered as potential bone marrow donors of the "Save Baby Fan Chai Campaign".

Baby Fan Chai is a nine-month old boy who is suffering from Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome (a form of leukaemia) and looking for a suitable bone marrow transplant. Last month, the Hong Kong Marrow Match Foundation organised a bone marrow donation campaign for him and urged Hong Kong people to test their blood.

"We've searched for a suitable bone marrow donor for Baby Fan Chai through our computer data base in connection with other data bases throughout the world," said Tracy Kwan Tak-ching, donor co-ordinator of the Foundation. "The computer traced a million people's records but could not find a suitable donor."

After reading an account of the baby's plight in a local newspaper, Sergeant Ko Chan-fai of NTN's Enforcement and Control Team of Tai Po and Border decided to test his blood to see if he was a potential bone marrow donor.

"Although I realise that bone marrow transplant surgery may have a certain degree of danger, I will still donate my marrow to the baby if it is found suitable," said Sergeant Ko. "Saving lives is an important role of police. When I saw that baby's innocent face in the newspaper, I decided to call upon my colleagues to participate in this meaningful marrow search."

Eventually, 50 officers from Sheung Shui Division and Traffic NTN signed up to attend a special blood test operation in Sheung Shui Police Station.

Representatives of the Hong Kong Marrow Match Foundation, together with members of the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service of Hong Kong, arranged a special joint operation at the station to collect blood samples of potential marrow donors, while at the same time acquiring more supplies of blood from donors.

So far 41 officers have donated blood and were registered as marrow donors, while six, including DVC Sheung Shui Rod Colson and SIP Winnie Tsang from E&C, Tai Po and Border, became marrow donors.

Members of the Force who are interested in testing their blood for possible bone marrow donations can contact the Foundation hotline on: 2855-9855.
