Airport chief hails
Police assistance

The Airport Authority Chief Executive Officer Billy Lam praised the efforts of Police in the rescue operation at Chek Lap Kok, and the subsequent recovery of wreckage.

"Local and overseas observers have described it as a miracle that casualties were relatively light given the serious nature of the accident," Mr Lam said.

"I'm sure this is largely due to the efficiency and professionalism of the disciplined services involved in the rescue. If the incident of August 22 proved anything, it was the value of training and well-rehearsed contingency planning."

Mr Lam described the conditions during the rescue as "frightful" and said the complex clean up and removal of the wreckage was also difficult. But the Police played a key role throughout, from the time the plane crashed until the south runway re-opened a week later, he said.

"The dangerous and distressing work of the Police in such an event can never be underestimated. They are among the first to arrive at the accident scene, and must cope with the trepidation and horror that often accompanies such incidents.

"Often they put their own safety at risk to save others, and must show compassion, courage and level headedness when dealing with the injured or their distressed relatives."

Mr Lam added the job was "unenviable", but was "essential".

"I hope those who took part have the satisfaction of knowing that lives were saved as a result of their efforts. Once more, the Hong Kong Police have proved their mettle as one of the finest police forces anywhere."
