Youngsters groomed
to manage road safety towns
Scores of Road Safety Patrol members are primed to help run traffic education facilities after recently graduating from the first Road Safety Town Assistant Pioneer Pilot Scheme.
The first batch of youngsters enrolled in the Scheme received their certificates during the annual open day of the Pak Fuk Road Safety Town in North Point on October 24.
The 28 youths, all Hong Kong Island secondary students, enriched their knowledge on road safety and developed presentation techniques under the three-month pilot Scheme.
Jointly organised by the Road Safety Unit of Traffic Branch Headquarters, Traffic Hong Kong Island and the Road Safety Patrol, the Scheme briefed trainee assistants on the management of the safety town, traffic regulations and road etiquette. They will soon help escort and educate road safety town visitors and run the facilities.
Road Safety Section Chief Inspector Josephine Lau said: "The Scheme is aimed at grooming members of the Road Safety Patrol with the potential to be leaders to help manage the road safety towns in order to release more Traffic officers for general duties.
"In addition to traffic regulations, the youngsters also learned a lot about communication and presentation skills, useful for their future work."
The scheme's success has prompted its introduction to the three other road safety towns in Sha Tin, Tuen Mun and Sau Mau Ping.
Traffic Headquarters Senior Superintendent Paul Croft and Road Safety Patrol Commander Lau Hon-wah, officiated at the Pak Fuk Road open day which attracted about 600 participants.
The day's highlights included games stalls, recitations by primary schoolers, Road Safety Patrol photo displays and a road safety sing-song and dance by the kids in the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol (Kindergarten) who thrilled spectators.
