The Henry Shield Race, 1999


Ready to roll: Eager competitors cram the starting line for the Henry Shield

The annual Henry Shield Relay Race took place in Aberdeen Country Park on October 19 under clear skies and in perfect running conditions.
More than 60 teams took part, with men running four stages and women three, over 3.7 kilometres of steep and twisting course around Aberdeen Lower Reservoir.
Police Tactical Unit chef Ho Kam-fuk showed just how healthy his meals were by clocking in the fastest leg of the men's Veteran category at 12 minutes, 14 seconds (12' 14"), beating his previous 1997 record by two seconds.
However it was New Territories North Police Constable Ching Ying-wai who clocked the fastest time of the day with 11' 20"- just eight seconds outside the record.
Fastest lady of the day was PTU's Ho Kit-ying who ran a personal best of 15' 16". She also contributed to the success of the PTU ladies A Team who came in at 47' 13".
PTU and the Airport Security Unit dominated the men's competition. The PTU A Team scorched around in 48' 09", a full two minutes ahead of runners-up ASU.
For the Region/District competition it was New Territories North who clocked the best team time of 51' 49" followed by Hong Kong Island's Eastern District who came in at 53' 46".
For the Marine and Police Headquarters formations, it was the Criminal Intelligence Bureau team in first with an aggregate time of 56' 02". Several senior officers, including Director of Operations Dick Lee Ming-kwai and HKI Regional Commander Leung Chi-bun, officiated at the trophy presentation ceremony.
However, the day's unsung heroes were the Junior Police Officer volunteers who took care of time keeping, marshalling and score tabulation.
