Ideas on access to reference materials

I would like to make some suggestions regarding access to Headquarters Orders or up-to-date Police Orders for reference by colleagues.

Computers and scanners should be provided at libraries (sic) in District and Regional Training Centres to enable officers to find the necessary reference materials and download or store them onto their own floppy diskettes. This is not only convenient for colleagues, it also saves a lot of money as less photocopying is needed.

In addition, consideration should also be given to storing reference materials on CD-ROMs as this is handy and convenient for colleagues to find what they want.

Training Wing responds . . .

By December 2001, the setting up of Resource Centres at 59 police stations will be completed as part of the Station Improvement Project. Computer terminals would be available at the Resource Centres for officers to access the Reference Materials System on the Police Intranet (POINT). Officers may download the reference materials onto floppy disk if necessary. However, they must protect the data against unauthorised or accidental disclosure to non-Force members. The same facility will be available in the Police Training School where all Regional Continuation Training will take place from June onwards.

As all up-to-date reference materials are available on POINT for open reference, keeping the reference in other storage devices, like CD-ROM, is considered unnecessary.
