Healthy relaxation for tomorrow
Officers' Suggestions III - concluding chapter

The Psychological Services Group is happy to conclude the healthy relaxation series with the third wave of suggestions from readers. In the next issue, Police Clinical Psychologist Joan Chan will share her experiences with single female groups.

Officers' Suggestions

1. Laugh everyday as big laughs can inflate your lungs and are good for your health.

2. Lower your self-standards. If your standards are too high, you may be frustrated by other peoples' way of doing things, and stress is induced as a result.

3. Do not impose your own expectations on others.

4. Keep yourself in a light mood. Work demands can make us very tensed. We should relax ourselves, let go and deal with problems with a peaceful heart. We can then stay calm, be happy, and our health will be better.

Psychologist's Remark

Positive thinking and optimistic attitudes are the groundwork for relaxation. On the other hand, self-standards can have a deep impact on our emotions. If we find we cannot meet our expectations and aspirations, we will be disappointed and frustrated. And if we think we cannot fulfil our responsibilities, we will be anxious and distressed. Therefore, we should reflect and adjust our levels of aspiration appropriately.

Officers' Suggestions

5. To have a healthy and relaxed life, we need a loving and supportive family. To build up harmonious and warm family relationships, we should manage our time properly and spend time with our family everyday. We should also manage our emotions and if difficulties are encountered, sharing with partners and family members can help.

Psychologist's Remark

Good social support is a strong buffer to helplessness and loneliness. Our family and friends may also be able to widen our perspectives and offer alternatives to solve our problems.

Once again, the time and effort of all officers who sent in their suggestions is deeply appreciated. We are so delighted to see many officers have their unique and healthy ways of relaxation. We sincerely hope this series can give you some insights, and you can establish your own healthy way to relax and enjoy its benefits.
