Nine formations and a senior officer were presented Outstanding Performance Awards by Chief Secretary for Administration Anson Chan at the Ninth Fight Crime Conference on December 2, at the Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The awards, organised by the Fight Crime Committee, commended formations and disciplined services officers for their anti-crime efforts and initiatives.

The Police formations were Wan Chai District Special Duty Squad Two, Western District Anti-triad Squad, Sha Tin District Crime Squad Four, Tsuen Wan District Anti-triad Squad Two, Kowloon West Regional Missing Persons Unit, Narcotics Bureau, Commercial Crime Bureau Fraud Sections Three, Four and 10 and Intelligence and Accounts Support Sections, Organised Crime and Triad Bureau Team B Two, and Criminal Intelligence Bureau B and D Divisions. New Territories North Superintendent (Administration) B.J. Smith was awarded for his work in innovative anti-juvenile crime programmes in Tuen Mun District, a lot of which were conducted in his own time.

  • Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, speaking at the Conference, said the fight against crime would remain one of the Government's important missions. He told the more than 400 FCC and District FCC members in attendance that the Government would render full support to fulfil the vision of the conference's theme 'Participation in the New Millennium for Fighting Crime'.

"We should work with great effort for the sustained prosperity and stability of our society to enable Hong Kong to remain a world city where people all enjoy a prosperous and peaceful life," Mr Tung said. "This is never an easy task. But building on our solid foundation with the concerted efforts of the Government and the entire community, we will surely be able to achieve our goal." He said Hong Kong remained one of the safest cities in the world thanks to the work of Police and other disciplined forces.
