Academic awards presented

Fourteen Junior Police Officers and 14 children of Force members were commended January 13 for top academic performances.

The event was the 2000/2001 awards presentation ceremony of the Police Children's Education Trust (PCET), the Police Education and Welfare Trust (PE&WT) and the Police Welfare Fund (PWF) at the Police Officers' Club. Trustee, Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui, commended the JPOs who received grants for completing job-related post-secondary courses, and the children who attained outstanding academic achievements in open examinations. With the number of scholarships awarded to children increasing from nine last year to 14, Mr Tsang encouraged the recipients to continue improving themselves and to contribute to the community.

"Society is a university and formal academic qualifications are important, but self-learning and self-improvement are much more significant. I am delighted to see that 94 JPOs have obtained post-secondary qualifications with the help of PWF's Education Loan and Grant Scheme this year," Mr Tsang said. "I hope the prizes will encourage officers and students to continue their efforts towards the goal of life-long learning so they will become a valuable asset to the Force and the community."

Recipients gave their thanks and shared their study experiences. The PCET and PE&WT were established in 1967 to provide bursaries and educational assistance to some 1,800 officers' children each year. The PWF's Education Loan and Grant Scheme was set up in 1998 to offer grants and loans to JPOs for further study at tertiary level in their own time.

Over 100 guests attended the ceremony, including officers and Raymond Kwok Ping-luen, PCET and PE&WT Management Committee Chairman.
