New caps head for trial

Feeling the difference: The new sample caps look virtually the same as existing ones

Some 500 Police caps made of Goretex are set for trial in the coming weeks.

Light, waterproof, foldable and well-ventilated, the caps will be tried on heads across a host of formations over the coming months to help further boost working conditions for officers.

Wan Chai Division Patrol Sub-unit Team Two were amongst the first to sample the new cap, with Support Wing's Superintendent (Field) Felix Law Cheuk-hung giving the officers a demonstration of its features at Wan Chai Police Station on February 26.

"Being lightweight, airy, water resistant and foldable, the cap brings unprecedented comfort and convenience to wearers. And it fits the head so well it will not fall off when an officer runs," SP Law said.

Made of thicker materials, existing caps could not be cleaned easily and often became dirty and smelly with time.

"However, there is absolutely no problem rinsing a Goretex cap in water to ensure hygiene. Plus, you can also easily clip the Force badge on and off using the tailor made slot on the brim," he said.

"And what's so special about the new design is that we have replaced the hard materials with softer ones, yet they still keep the cap in good shape."

The cap was very well received by the Wan Chai officers who hailed its comfort, practicality and style. They said they could hardly wait to try it out on the job. Mr Law said the Force was also looking at the feasibility of adopting similar attributes for female officers' caps.

He added that the caps' introduction was just one example of the Force Management's commitment to expediting the process of making improvements to uniforms and accoutrements.

More initiatives were in the pipeline.
