Pre-employment dream comes true

Remember Tsang Sai-bun and Lai Tsz-yan? Take a look at OffBeat Issue 691 and you will have some ideas. They were Government Youth Pre-employment Training Programme graduates and were recruited as Police Constables.

After finishing their tough Police Training School instruction in January, Sai-bun and Tsz-yan graduated and were attached to Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan Divisions respectively. Sai-bun recently told OffBeat how he was handling his first post.

Once shy and callow, Sai-bun has matured and gained confidence, saying his job in YL Division's Patrol Sub-unit Team Four was more exciting and interesting than he had expected.

"What we learned at PTS were basic skills and theories. But I soon realised that we had to be flexible, adaptable and be able to make quick responses as situations could change quickly."

The support, valuable experience and generous assistance offered by his Yuen Long colleagues helped him overcome any challenges.

"I can remember how nervous I was during the first few days as it was the first time for me to patrol with so much equipment and it took a while to get used to the job."

Sai-bun said his confidence in his career choice had been bolstered after tasting the real life of a policeman.

"I am sure this is the life that I want and the job helps me broaden my horizons and mature."

He said he wished to enrich his experience and boost his adaptability by grasping every opportunity to sample different situations and exchange experience with colleagues. He was also interested in upgrading himself through further study.

Sai-bun's sincere smile reflects his satisfaction with his job and life choice. It appears the training programme was not only a turning point for Sai-bun, but a reliable channel for the Force to continue recruiting top talent.
