CPC Series-
Be a frank and caring colleague

The following are the views of a Wan Chai District officer:

We were all relieved to hear that our two courageous colleagues who sustained gunshot injuries in the Kowloon City incident on May 22 are fast recovering.

I greatly appreciated Police Constable Sze Kwan-ming's reaction during the incident when, despite his serious facial wounds, he kept reminding his colleagues to take care of his wounded partner. PC Sze's care for workmates and his bravery that defied personal danger did indeed impress me.

I keep pondering one point. If, during a life and death moment we are able to project our unique personal qualities and spare nothing to assist colleagues, then what about working in safe and pleasant working conditions? Are we doing all we can to maintain excellence and enhance service quality?

From my UB frontline experience, there are usually signs indicating major problems which, if perceived early enough, could be nipped in the bud. In complaints against Police, the officer concerned might have already shown irregularities in his conduct or performance before being complained against. Such officers might have difficulties in communicating with others, some might not be fully conversant with work procedures and these might later result in faults and allegations of misconduct. Such problems are not uncommon in the Force. While the officer in question might not be aware of the problem, his colleagues should be able to spot it.

It all depends on whether colleagues care enough to point out such problems frankly. Instead of covering up, or tolerating such problems, the officer should be assisted unconditionally and with sincerity in his efforts to enhance his own personal values.

We all know that 'sometimes the truth hurts'. However, instead of covering up wrongdoings, it would be much better for us to resolve the problems before they go beyond the point of redemption. Perhaps when our colleagues boldly offer a piece of honest advice, they are in fact showing them the same kind of care demonstrated by PC Sze to his colleague in the shooting incident.

Be a frank and caring colleague! Our Force depends on our sincerity and co-operation to further improve our efficiency .
