Thirty members of Hong Kong Police Chinese Culture Club's dance troupe, led by their Vice-Chairperson Helen Kwong, and dance instructor, Mr Chen Hei-hing, studied Chinese dancing and related training last month during a visit to the Xinghai Conservatory of Music and Guangzhou Song & Dance Ensemble, which are provincial and municipal government art units respectively on the Mainland.

They also had the opportunity to appreciate a number of fantastic dance performances and shared knowledge and expertise in Chinese dancing, which enjoys a very high international reputation.

On the first day of the visit, the troupe members visited the Guangzhou Song & Dance Ensemble Theatre where they watched a newly staged performance, "Glory Canton". In this large scale dance epic, the choreographer used Xiguan romantic story as the main theme to include the quintessence of Lingnan culture, namely nursery rhythm, dragon boat, teahouse, Nanquan boxing and Cantonese opera, etc., to reflect Cantonese's hardworking, practical, tolerant and open-minded characters.

On the second day, they called at the Dancing Department of the Xinghai Conservatory of Music, which is one of the 10 best performance arts colleges on the Mainland. The undergraduates of the department are all top students who have graduated from specialist dancing secondary schools. The academic staff arranged the troupe members to visit their training and rehearsals of various Chinese cultural dancing, namely Mongolian, Kangding and Sichuan styles. Their professional performance was an eye-opener for the members in this performing art.
