Talk on knowledge sharing by world-class practitioner |

Has any of the following questions come across your mind? (i) How to inculcate a knowledge sharing culture? (ii) How to retain knowledge among retired officers? (iii) Is a mistake-sharing environment feasible? (iv) How to balance accountability and creativity of knowledge? (v) What is the relationship between learning and knowledge management? If yes, you may find answers or insights from a talk on "Knowledge Sharing at the World Bank", given by Mr Bruno Andre Laporte, a world-class Knowledge Management (KM) practitioner. More than 130 officers spent a worthwhile morning on May 21 during the Management Development Programme (MDP) on "Knowledge Management", jointly organised by Service Quality Wing and Training Wing. Knowledge sharing is a critical process of Knowledge Management as it enables officers to build competence on earlier experience and to avoid making repetitive mistakes. In this MDP, Mr Laporte, KM Manager of the World Bank, shared with the participants his experience and lessons learnt in applying knowledge sharing practices, Communities of Practices (CoPs) in particular, at the World Bank. During the one-and-a-half-hour seminar, Mr Laporte introduced the types of CoPs, goals and benefits of CoPs, as well as challenges of setting up CoPs. He also talked about his lessons learnt, from the perspectives of leadership, communities, communication, behaviour, performance management and technology, based on his experience of KM implementation at the World Bank. The MDP was well received, with the participants engaging in an active discussion with Mr Laporte after the presentation, making it the highlight of the seminar. Within the Force, a Knowledge Management Project began as early as 2001 with the aim of enhancing the Force's overall efficiency and effectiveness. For details of the project, please contact Mr Francis Cheung Chun-por, SSP ES SQ, at 2860-6577, Mr Stephen So Kam-pang, CIP ES SQ, at 2860-6578 or Mr Eric Choy Sun-yam, KMO ES SQ, at 2860-6573.
