The Mong Kok Community Hall recently echoed with singing, applause and laughter as the Regional Crime Prevention Office of Kowloon West's "Anti-deception Drama Contest" was in progress.

Fifteen teams from various organisations in Kowloon West were vying for the championship in support of the contest's objective of educating the public, in particular senior citizens, on the common tricks used by swindlers, and raising awareness of protecting personal belongings. The teams mainly came from integrated service centres, elderly centres and women organisations.

The contest was supported by the local community and organisations, including Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor, Mr Lau Chi-wing, sitting on the contest's adjudication panel; Hong Kong Police Old Comrades' Association members lending a hand in the event; Hong Kong St. John Ambulance providing first-aid services at the venue, and the management of the community hall waiving the venue charge.

The contest started off immediately after the Chairman of the Kowloon City District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Chan Wing-lim, and Senior Superintendent (Crime) Kowloon West, Mr Leung Ka-ming, had officiated at the opening ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Leung said there was a decrease in deception cases in Kowloon West this year as compared with last year, indicating that not only the police had put in more efforts in enforcement actions and publicity, but also the public had become more conscious of fraud prevention.

He disclosed that to forge a partnership with the community in fighting crime, the police had invited some 300 people, including the contestants and the audience attending the contest, to help spread crime prevention messages to the different sectors of the community in the capacity of "Fraud Prevention Ambassadors".

During the contest, each competing team was allocated five minutes to expose swindlers' tricks and offer prevention tips with a creative script. The contest was so close that the adjudication panel had a hard time in selecting the champion.

Finally, the Chan Hing Social Services Centre of Mong Kok Kai Fong Association brought the house down with their play and won the championship and the best prop award, followed by Caritas Elderly Centre - Lai Kok as 1st runner-up and Peninsular Lions Club Jubilee Lutheran Centre for the Elderly as 2nd runner-up.

The best costume award went to E.F.C.C. - Mei Foo Social Centre for the Elderly.

All the wining teams were presented with trophies, awards and cash coupons, while each of participants, including contestants and audience, carried away a gift pack.

The "Anti-deception Drama Contest" has drawn a big response from the community
