Three officers from the Force Escort Group (FEG) visited Melbourne, Australia, and met officers of the Victoria Police Road Policing Solo Unit from March 25 to 28.

Led by Chief Inspector (CIP) Chik Ming-yam and comprising Senior Inspector Yang Chung-ping and Station Sergeant Ng Chung-king, the delegation first called at the Victoria Police Headquarters in Melbourne and met Assistant Commissioner (Road Policing), Mr Robert Hill.

After the meeting, delegation members met Road Policing Inspector David Griffin and Solo Unit Commander, Senior Sergeant Daniel Hilton, for a briefing on the structure and job of the Solo Unit, including vehicles, equipment, training and escort tactics. Both parties shared experiences and discussed training programmes and escort tactics.

The delegation also visited the Command and Control Centre, Critical Incident Response Team, Police Driver Training Centre and Victoria Traffic Management Centre.

The Solo Unit consists of 20 traffic police officers, who are responsible for normal road policing. If necessary, they would form an escort group for VVIP, money, arms and ammunition or funeral. Hence, the unit's job is very similar to that of the FEG. Therefore, both parties have quite a number of good practices and escort tactics to share.

The delegation also had an on-site observation of how the Solo Unit carried out a VVIP Escort Exercise in the town areas of Melbourne.

The visit enabled delegation members to gain an insight into road policing management, especially escort tactics.
