Yuen Long District (YLDIST) has been promoting road safety with a three-pronged approach comprising publicity, education and enforcement.
To prevent traffic accidents involving bicycles, YLDIST rolled out a publicity campaign on safe cycling on May 4. This publicity event enjoyed big community support when a member of the Yuen Long District Council and the council's Traffic and Transport Committee, Mr Man Kwong-ming, along with officers from the Road Safety Team of New Territories North Traffic Headquarters, volunteers from the Hong Kong Road Safety Team and Non-ethnic Chinese mentees of YLDIST's Project Himalaya, handed out publicity leaflets and souvenirs in Nam Sang Wai area which is a popular spot for cycling.
With a view to reducing traffic accidents involving bicycles, officers explained the safety precautions and the relevant traffic regulations to cyclists and advised them to comply with traffic regulations and wear protective gear such as helmet, elbow pads and kneepads. The officers also reminded cyclists to pay more attention to road conditions, cycling attitude and cycling skills.YLDIST hopes the campaign would disseminate the message of safe cycling not only to cyclists but also their friends and families. It will continue to work closely with other government departments, educational institutes and community organisations to promote safe cycling for the vision of "Zero Accident on Road".
