Patient: I have just got a new puppy. It would be great if I can train it to do some nice tricks. Doctor: You can try the carrot and stick approach. Patient: But I do not think my puppy likes eating carrots. Doctor: Carrot and stick is an idiom that refers to the use of both reward and punishment to induce desirable behaviour. In the ancient time, people drive a donkey on by either dangling out a carrot or whipping it with a stick. I would however recommend rewarding much more than punishing.
