An atmospheric water generator is a device that can condense clean, drinking water from humidity in the ambient air. It consists of a condenser, which can be powered by electricity or solar energy. As moist air was channelled in, it is cooled to its dew point, causing it to condense. The resulting water is collected in a tank and undergoes purification and ultra-filtration, so there is no contamination from the polluted air.

This technology can not only quench our thirst, but also saves thousands of lives. There are over 780 million people on earth not having sufficient potable water. Furthermore, more than 40% of the world’s big cities are vulnerable to water shortages. This problem is exacerbating because of global warming. Condensing humidity into drinking water could be one of the solutions that scientists should look further into.

To make this system effective, the air must have at least 50% humidity with temperatures over 20˚C. Hong Kong seems to be one of the best candidates to apply this technology as we are situated in a sub-tropical region with hot and humid weather.
