Police Constable Kenix has joined the Force for 14 years. She possesses superior skills in operating Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), which are commonly known as drones. She represented Hong Kong in many overseas competitions and applies her drone flying skills in policing work.
She said, “I have a passion for photography. In 2013, my father bought a drone, so I began to practise drone photography. It sparked my interest in operating UAS and gradually I improved my operating skills.” Kenix explained that a drone is a type of UAS, which can be operated more easily with the assistance of a computer. In 2018, under her colleagues’ influence, she started to experiment with first-person view (FPV) drones, another type of UAS. It is more difficult to operate a FPV drone as Kenix needs to control the drone manually through a wireless remote controller, but with her rich experience in operating drones for photography, she picked up the techniques for flying FPV drones easily. And pretty soon, she was given the opportunity to participate in a FPV obstacle racing competition.
Kenix said, “Operating a FPV drone requires you to wear a goggle that connects to the camera of the drone, so I feel like I am actually flying. The experience is filled with excitement and fulfilment. After I practised for a few months, the first FAI World Drone Racing Championships was held in Longgang District, Shenzhen. The competition required team participation and the Hong Kong team needed a female player, so I joined the competition and represented Hong Kong for the first time. There were participants from over 30 countries and regions. Even though I had little experience at the time, I managed to complete the competition. Afterwards, I continued to represent Hong Kong in many international competitions, and even received a gold medal in a mainland competition.”
Over the years, Kenix has served in various formations including the Task Force Sub-unit of Mong Kok District, the Police Tactical Unit, the Criminal Intelligence Bureau and the Railway District, etc. As she is skilful in operating UAS, her skills match well with search operations. In 2018, she joined the Force Search Unit, a volunteer secondary duty cadre, and in the following year she was transferred to the Key Points and Search Division. “Using the example of searching for a missing person on a mountain, the use of UAS can collect information to narrow down the search area before officers conduct a search operation. This can significantly save time and increase efficiency,” she said.
Kenix pointed out that most of the search operations require more time, so officers mainly use UAS with bigger battery capacity. However, there is also a place for FPV drones, for example at the award presentation ceremony of the first STEM-Up HK Innovation and Technology Competition organised by the Junior Police Call, she gave a special FPV performance and won the audience’s applause.
