To align with smart city development and enhance the efficiency of policing operations, the Information Systems Wing (ISW) has introduced the Force’s first patrol robot, which will commence its six-month trial operation in mid-October in the departure hall of the Passenger Clearance Building at the Hong Kong Port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).


The patrol robot is ISW’s proof-of-concept project jointly developed by the Innovation and Solution Lab (ISLAB) and a local technology company from Hong Kong Science Park. The patrol robot can operate around the clock. In addition to performing automated navigation patrols and disseminating information, it features a help button allowing the public to directly communicate with officers in emergency situations and is equipped with cameras to help officers understand the actual environment for operational deployment. The robot is also fitted with LiDAR and ultrasonic sensors, using AI algorithms for self-positioning, enabling it to stop or detour when necessary to avoid accidents and ensure safety.


ISLAB demonstrated the functions of the patrol robot to the management of the Airport District (APTDIST) and conducted two training sessions in late September for 48 APTDIST officers, teaching them how to operate the patrol robot in their daily work. District Commander of APTDIST Yip Pun-yu expressed satisfaction with the performance of the robot and hoped that it could prove its effectiveness in its operation and complement the work of frontline officers. Telecommunications Engineer of ISLAB Kwok Siu-man stated, “The patrol robot can facilitate frontline officers in daily patrols and law enforcement, allowing officers more time to handle other important and complex tasks.”
