Healthy Lifestyles

Officers with their families indulging in an
art all but lost in Hong Kong's concrete jungle

Reaping what they sow

IN support of the Force's healthy lifestyle campaign, the Sports and Recreation Division recently organised a Summer Planting Day at Wong Hau Shan Police Recreation Centre to provide the opportunity for Force members to enjoy a worthwhile outing with their families and friends.

Participants not only learned about the theory of planting, but also experienced the joy of ploughing the soil, seeding and, eventually, growing and harvesting - things that have been lost in the concrete jungle of the HKSAR.

Prior to the day staff from the Sports and Recreation Division worked hard to open up a piece of uncultivated land at the centre, spending long hours clearing grass and weeds and removing and pruning trees which blocked sunshine from reaching the field.

Seedlings planted by the participants included tomatoes, chillies and popular vegetables, with a pledge by those involved to farm the land in their leisure time in the hope of seeing the harvest in the next three months.

Popular but tough Physical Training Instructors Course for disciplined services sees 18 more graduate

SINCE its inception, 283 officers from the Hong Kong Police, Customs & Excise, Immigration, USD and ICAC have attended the eight-week Physical Training Instructors Course organised by the Training Development Bureau, with 18 participants graduating from its most recent semester in late June.

The 18 graduates comprised a sergeant, nine PCs, four WPCs, an Immigration officer, a USD staff member and two officers from the ICAC.

During the popular but tough two months, participants received training in instructional techniques, lifesaving, swimming teaching, self-defence (including Pressure Point Control Tactics), first aid, adventure training (including mountain climbing, canoeing and orienteering), health, nutrition and heart rate monitoring.

Four of the graduates from the Force have been posted as physical training instructors at the Police Training School, while another four have become instructors in their own formations which include the CIB, the VIP Protection Unit, the ASU and the Sports and Recreation Division.

Four officers from three other government departments will also take up training duties for their own departments.
