Henry Shield Relay Race

Henry Shield runners get under way; catch their breath (middle); and celebrate (below)

THE Henry Shield Relay Race, organised by C PTI PTS Thomas Cheung Wui and his team of PTIs,was ren under managebale weather conditions, a trifle warm but dry, on Tuesday October 20.

Starting and finishing at the same point on the Aberdeen Reservoir Road, the 3.7 km hilly circuit, round the lower Aberdeen Reservoir, was competed on by 39 police formation teams.

Among the Regions, the combined NT North and South men's teams put in the best performance. Of the PHQ formations CIB has the fastest team, putting in a respectable time of 53 minutes. For the ladies, once again it was Central District which dominated the field in a fast time of 47:49 for their team of three runners.

The elitist specialist and training formations vied for top honours as usual. ASU just piped the PTU open category four-man team in a near record time of 48:30. Although the young, comparatively inexperienced PTS team was not far behind! For the senior and veteran categories, traditionally a tough competition between PTU and PTS, it was the trun of the athletes down from the mountainous climes of the New Territories to win. In the veteran category the PTU team broke the record in a sparkling time of 52:49.

Individual performances were worth watching with former PTS champion veteran runner Ho Kam-fuk turning in a time of 12:31, which contributed to PTU's veteran team success. Also PTU's Sergeant Chow Chi-keung did the circuit in a new record time of 12:05 in the seniors' category. The competitor who ran the fastest leg overall, in a time of 11:19, was Wanchai District's PC Ching Ying-wai, a relative newcomer to the PAC stable. He was closely followed by ASU's PC Wing Wing-kuen who still holds the record.

Organisers of the race were members of the Police Training School, Police Tactical Unit, Personnel Services Branch, Sports and Recreation Division, and committee members of the Police Athletics Club.

At the presentation ceremony chairman of the Police Athletics Club JCS McDouall led those gathered in a minute's silence for former Commissioner of Police, the late Roy Henry, after whom the event is named.

ACP IS Peter Halliday, Peter JY Chan, Hon Vice President of the PAC, and Director of Operations Benny Ng Ching-kwok presented the trophies.
